I think this statement in the article summed it up best:
“For the great divide in our politics isn’t really about pragmatic issues, about which policies work best; it’s about differences in those very moral imaginations Mr. Obama urges us to expand, about divergent beliefs over what constitutes justice.”
The need for one standard of morality means that human beings will always fall short of being good and moral. We are biased enough to not be able to fairly carry out justice and too damaged to wholly understand what being moral means.
